Astronaut Jim Lovell Serves as the Grand Marshal for the LifeLock 400
On September 20, LifeLock’s CEO Todd Davis revealed Apollo 13’s Commander James Lovell had accepted our invitation to serve as the Grand Marshal for the LifeLock 400. The race took place at the Kansas Speedway on September 30 and was the third in a series of Chases for the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup. We were thrilled to have former astronaut Jim Lovell, famous for the legendary words “Huston, we have a problem,” utter the traditional “Gentlemen Start Your Engines” to an uproarious crowd of 100,000 racecar fans. In anticipation of the event, Jim Lovell was quoted as saying, “I truly appreciate the offer to serve as Grand Marshal for the LifeLock 400. This will be a tremendous opportunity for me to get closer to the exciting sport of NASCAR, as well as LifeLock, the company protecting my identity.”
A distinguished naval officer, Jim Lovell came to the attention of the world when his 1970 mission to the Moon went terribly wrong, forcing him and his two other crew members to turn Apollo 13’s lunar module, Aquarius, into a lifeboat. Immortalized in the Apollo 13 film as an American hero who calmly and successfully guided his ship and his crew back to earth, James Lovell has led an extraordinary life as an astronaut, author, restaurateur, and spokesperson. In addition, he has received countless awards and distinctions for his philanthropy and service to the American people, including the Presidential Medal for Freedom and the Congressional Space Medal of Honor. Unfortunately, his prominent status has caused him to become a victim of identity theft. After he discovered his social security number and signature were being sold on E-Bay, he became one of our tens of thousands of satisfied customers, and we are proud to give something back to this impressive man whom America owes so much. After Jim Lovell accepted LifeLock’s invitation, our CEO Todd Davis commented, “We are honored to have a true American hero accept our invitation. While the cars of the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup series go much slower than what he has experienced during his career as a naval aviator, test pilot and astronaut, I have a feeling that he will still be able to associate with what the drivers go through and the machines they drive.”
A proud sponsor of several nonprofit organizations and sporting events, we have held several minor sponsorships deals in NASCAR, such as the #49 BAM NASCAR NEXTEL Cup car, and in the past, we have supported the IRL Pro Series. As an identity theft protection company with sincere interests in our community and nation, we continue to seek new opportunities to sponsor sporting events like the LifeLock 400.
